Being capable doesn't make you immune to burnout.

Your team believes you've got everything under control.

Your manager expects results.

Your colleagues rely on you.

However, being the person everyone depends on comes at a cost.

Everyone thinks you've got it handled

  • You spend the day making decisions and then can't decide what to have for dinner.
  • You keep replaying one difficult conversation long after everyone else has moved on.
  • You're protecting your team from pressure coming down from above.
  • Your calendar is full of meetings, but the actual work still has to get done.
  • You close the laptop, but work doesn't leave your head.
  • You find yourself sitting in the car for a few minutes before going inside because you're not ready for anyone else to need something from you.

Looking capable on the outside doesn't tell us what it's costing you underneath.

And then the expectations

  •   Your team comes to you.
  • Your manager expects results.
  • You're managing upwards and downwards.
  • You're having difficult conversations.
  • You're absorbing other people's frustrations.
  • You keep saying yes because explaining why you can't feels harder.
  • You close the laptop but keep thinking about work.

And you're beginning to wonder how long you can keep doing it.

This isn't about becoming a better manager.

  Counselling can explore:

  • workplace stress
  • burnout
  • performance anxiety
  • perfectionism
  • people pleasing
  • confidence
  • boundaries
  • difficult workplace relationships
  • emotional labour
  • leadership pressure
  • difficulty switching off
  • identity beyond achievement

The goal isn't to make you more productive.

It's to understand what work is costing you and what needs to change.

I understand the world you're working in

I'm Kim, a counsellor with a Bachelor of Psychology and a Postgraduate Diploma in Counselling. But I also hold a Masters of Project Management and an MBA (majoring in Strategic Human Resource Management), so not your average Counsellor.

Before becoming a counsellor, I spent more two decades working in senior leadership roles and leading large and diverse teams. I've experienced the realities of organisational life, the competing priorities, difficult conversations, responsibility for people and outcomes, managing upwards while supporting a team, navigating change and the expectation that when you're the leader, you'll keep things moving.

I've been the boss and the employee. And outside work, I've also been the mother, stepmother, daughter, sister, auntie and friend. I understand what it can feel like to move between roles throughout the day and still feel expected to show up fully in each one.

That experience is separate from my counselling training, and I don't assume that my experiences are the same as yours. But it gives me an understanding of the environments and competing responsibilities many of the women I work with are trying to navigate.

You are competent and very good at what you do and are finding that work is taking more from you than it used to. Counselling with me isn't about making you more productive or turning you into a ‘better’ leader. It's a space to focus on the person behind the role, to understand what's happening, explore patterns such as perfectionism, people pleasing or feeling responsible for everyone, strengthen boundaries and consider what a healthier and more sustainable relationship with work could look like.

You are more than your performance, your position and what you achieve for other people.

You don't have to keep proving you can handle everything.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Counselling@skymanage.com.au if you cannot find an answer to your question.

It's counselling. While we might talk about work situations, the focus is on you — how you're feeling, what's driving the stress, and what support looks like for you, not on performance strategy or career coaching tactics.

What you share in counselling is treated confidentially, within the usual legal and ethical limits of confidentiality. We'll discuss those limits clearly before counselling begins.

This gives you a private space to talk openly about workplace situations you may not feel able to discuss with colleagues or people in your organisation.

That's completely fine. Counselling isn't about pushing you toward any particular decision, including quitting. Plenty of people come to work through how to stay in a role sustainably, not to be talked into leaving it.

Yes. Looking capable on the outside doesn't mean everything is sustainable underneath. A lot of people I see are still performing well at work. Counselling can help before things reach a breaking point, not just after.

Performance anxiety is something we can work on together, whether it shows up around presentations, decision-making, difficult conversations or the pressure of being seen as ‘the reliable one’.

Work may only be one part of what you're carrying.
